Welcome!

TurnAround Couriers is a professional and socially responsible bicycle courier service in Toronto. We have been providing exceptional service at competitive rates while changing the lives of at-risk youth since 2002.

TurnAround Couriers recruits only at-risk youth for all its bicycle courier positions and back office staff. This affords job-ready young people a chance to gain the experience, confidence and financial means they need. But TurnAround Couriers is not a charity - it is a competitive growing business, with a heart.

“All our orders are treated in a timely and businesslike manner with a friendly and courteous approach. I have no hesitation in recommending TurnAround Couriers to anyone.”

Elaine Mallick
Manager of Logistics, RBC Financial Group

February 2011

A Message from Richard

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope that 2011 has got off to a good start for you!

2010 was a financially challenging year for TurnAround Couriers (TC), although there were many highlights:

  • We ended the year with a staff of 15 – including 12 couriers – the most that we have ever had.
  • We have now saved taxpayers over $500,000 (shelter cost savings, plus income support cost savings, plus employment agency services cost savings) since we began operations in 2002.
  • We had the privilege to begin working for a number of prestigious organizations, notably RBC Capital Markets and RBC Dominion Securities (in both downtown Toronto and the GTA) and Burgundy Asset Management.
  • We developed our partnership with Atripco Delivery Services, who help us with our client’s deliveries requiring car or van delivery service to the GTA. This has gone very well indeed and Atripco has also embarked on a social hiring campaign for its own operations.
  • We donated $500 to Gateway Café, our largest source of staff in 2010.

We thank all of our clients and stakeholders for making this happen. Your business and your referrals make such a difference for youth who are ready to work and eager to make the most of the opportunity.

Please spread the word and forward this newsletter. With your business and your referrals we will continue to grow, save tax dollars, and change lives.

From the team at TurnAround Couriers, we wish you all the best in 2011.

Richard Derham,
Founder and Manager

First National Financial

Financial Services firm uses TC for speed and reliability.

First National Financial LP uses TC to deliver important legal documents, proposals and business communications to very important clients for same day or overnight deliveries. Reliable, professional and on-time delivery by polite couriers is important to their success as Canada’s largest non-bank lender. That’s why TC has become the only bicycle courier company First National uses.

First National’s Office Services Coordinator Amy Punzo tells us that she recommends TC because of their exceptional service, professionalism and the people.

“Richard chooses good couriers. The people are great, very friendly and quick. As soon as we place the order they’re there – as if they were just behind the door,” says Amy.

She also notes that she has recently tried the delivery service offered in partnership with Atripco for deliveries outside of the downtown core and is pleased to have this additional service available.

About TC, Amy says “They’re a great company to use…You can count on them.”

Atripco

Expanding the service area. Sharing the social hiring model.

Atripco is a family run courier company that serves the GTA and beyond and delivers everything from envelopes to skids. Owners and staff are proud of the company’s social initiatives. These initiatives have included donations for the Food Bank, Second Harvest, the Toronto Star Santa Clause Fund, the Children’s Aid Society, and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Their emphasis on service and community has made Atripco an ideal partner for TC. You can book deliveries by car across the GTA with Atripco through the TC online ordering system, in addition to your regular TC downtown deliveries.

As part of this partnership, Atripco has committed to enhancing their social hiring practices. Since beginning the partnership, Atripco has developed relationships with agencies that help individuals facing employment barriers. These agencies include COSTI Immigrant Services, Canadian Paraplegic Association, Microskills Career Foundation, and Job Connect through the YMCA. Atripco distributes job postings for all courier positions to these agencies as an integral part of their search. Working with these agencies, Atripco recently made 2 social hires – both men with families facing financial difficulty.

“We’re excited to offer deliveries outside of the downtown area for TC clients and we look forward to giving them the same great service we have offered for 40 years,” says Lindsay Service in Human Resources at Atripco.

Lindsay is also excited about their growing social hiring initiatives.

“We’re proud of our social hiring. We learned a lot about it from Richard and it’s happened sooner at Atripco because of our partnership with TC. I hope we can inspire other companies to do the same,” she says.

TurnAround Couriers is pleased to work with Atripco to offer clients a wider delivery service area, and to encourage social hiring in other community-minded businesses.

Akil Robinson

A thoughtful young courier shares his experiences on the TC team

Akil Robinson has been a member of the TC team for 14 months. He starts the day early, and work as a bicycle courier can be physically demanding. Sometimes he is literally moving all day.

But Akil has no complaints. He’s thankful for the business and glad to play a part in the success of TC clients.

“ Our clients all work really hard too, and it’s a nice thing to be able to help them do their work. Who knows how hard they worked on the package you’re holding? But it has to get where it’s going fast and that’s what we’re about,” says Akil.

Akil feels that his job with TurnAround Couriers has helped him in a lot of ways. He learned to take better care of himself so he could do a physically demanding job. Now he eats and sleeps better. And he’s happier. He enjoys the freedom and the people – the TC team and the clients.

“There are cool people at TC and I get to hang out with them,” says Akil.

He also appreciates the opportunity to earn income that he can use for essentials and to take good care of his bike and work equipment.

About TC clients, Akil says “We’re very grateful for their business. It’s easy to work hard for them because we all benefit from the relationship.”
